Sirhan Sirhan Assassin of Robert F. Kennedy

Sirhan Sirhan (b. 1944) is a Palestinian who shot and killed Robert F. Kennedy and wounded five others at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968. He stood trial and was sentenced to the death penalty, but his sentence was converted to life imprisonment when California declared the death penalty unconstitutional. Robert F. His childhood was shaped by the Arab-Israeli violence surrounding the birth of Israel in 1948. An older brother was killed by a military vehicle fleeing sniper fire. His father, Bishara, was embittered by unemployment and dislocation to Jordanian-controlled East Jerusalem and became abusive to his wife and children. The Sirhans emigrated to the United States in 1957 and settled in the Los Angeles suburb of Pasadena when Sirhan was about 12. Not long after, Bishara abandoned the family and returned to Jordan. Sirhan struggled in school before graduating in 1963, at which point he embarked on a series of odd jobs. His dream was to become a jockey. Standing just over five feet tall and weighing only 115 pounds, he had the right build, but despite intense training, he proved to be a poor rider. During a training session in 1966, he was thrown from his mount and knocked unconscious, ending his career before it even started. "Kennedy Must Die" Family and friends later noted that Sirhan was much more prone to anger following his concussion. He had never been political, but by the end of 1967, he had grown obsessed with the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Six-Day War in June of that year. Notebooks found by investigators seemed to show that Sirhan fixated on Senator Robert Kennedy’s support for Israel. After Kennedy promised in a May 1968 campaign speech to send fifty fighter jets to Israel if he were elected, Sirhan wrote in a notebook that â€Å"Kennedy must die before June 5th, the first anniversary of the Six-Day War. Assassination of Robert Kennedy Kennedy was scheduled to be in Los Angeles on the night of June 4, 1968 for the state’s Democratic primary. Sirhan spent part of the day at a shooting range, practicing with his .22 caliber Iver-Johnson Cadet revolver. In the evening, he began to case the Ambassador Hotel, quickly assessing that Kennedy would pass through the kitchen behind the ballroom where he would deliver his victory speech. Sirhan tucked himself in a corner of the kitchen and waited. At around 12:15 am on June 5, Kennedy and his entourage entered the kitchen and began to greet the staff. Sirhan stepped out and opened fire, hitting Kennedy once in the head and twice in the back. Before he was tackled by bystanders, Sirhan managed to empty his weapon, striking United Auto Workers official Paul Schrade, ABC News unit manager William Weisel, reporter Ira Goldstein, campaign volunteer Irwin Stoll, and Kennedy fan Elizabeth Evans. All five survived. Kennedy was rushed into emergency surgery nearby Good Samaritan Hospital, but the damage to his brain was too extensive. He died 26 hours later at 1:44 am on June 6, 1968. Aftermath and Trial Sirhan was arrested at the scene and confessed to the shooting. With his guilt not at issue, his defense team worked with prosecutors on a plea agreement that would spare the 24-year old the death penalty. Judge Herbert Walker rejected the plea deal.  Lee Harvey Oswald had been killed before he could stand trial for the murder of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, sowing doubts about the events surrounding the assassination.  He was determined that Sirhan should face a trial by jury.  Ã‚   The trial lasted from February 12 to April 23, 1969 and was marked throughout by Sirhan bizarre behavior and frequent outbursts. At one point, he demanded Walker remove his attorneys and accept his guilty pleas. â€Å"What do you want to do about the penalty?† Walker asked. â€Å"I will ask to be executed,† Sirhan replied. Walker denied the request. In the end, both Sirhan and his defense team showed he was a disturbed young man prone to fits of rage and memory lapses. The prosecution showed he was capable of planning and carrying out a murder. The jury found him guilty and sentenced him to death. Behind Bars Sirhan was taken to San Quentin to await execution, but less than two years into his sentence, the California Supreme Court declared the death penalty unconstitutional and his sentence was converted to life imprisonment. Over the past 46 years, Sirhan has argued that he was drunk on the night of the assassination and didn’t realize what he was doing, that he had been brainwashed by others to commit the murder, and that he was acting under the influence of hypnosis. His legal team has been unable to get him a new trial to examine what they say is evidence he was the victim of a conspiracy. He’s also been denied parole more than a dozen times. Since 2013, Sirhan has been housed at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego County. He was visited there around Christmas 2017 by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who has long believed that Sirhan did not act alone on the night his father was killed.  Ã¢â‚¬Å"I was disturbed that the wrong person might have been convicted of killing my father,† Kennedy told reporters. â€Å"My father was the chief law enforcement officer in this country. Elvis Presley and the Rock n Roll Transformation Essay This critique will contrast the pop song Jailhouse Rock with reggae track Legalize It. The songs will be compared in musical aesthetic, rhythmic properties, song form and structure, harmonic progression and melodic contour, the dynamic relationship between harmony and melody as well as the lyrical content. As my pop piece, I have selected the classic Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley. I define this as a popular song because it charted at number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100 Charts (All Music, 2014) and the UK Singles Chart (Official Charts, 2014). The song is set at about 150bpm. Seven seconds into the song (having already laid the foundations of the track with Scotty Moore’s memorable riff), Elvis begins to sing the verse lyrics over the same intro Riff in a tenor/countertenor. At 18 seconds the song has already stepped into the chorus section, which delivers a short 12 bar blues turnaround in the same key but away from the initial riff. At 30 seconds it repeats the verse and chorus. At 57 seconds it repeats the verse and chorus again. After the 3rd chorus we reach the guitar solo, which is played over a short 3-chord turnaround and then flies straight into the 4th verse and chorus. We then have a 5th verse and chorus. The chorus is repeated along with the ‘Jailhouse rock’ refrain until the song is faded out to its conclusion. The song essentially follows a verse-chorus structure with a guitar break two-thirds through. So we’d say its in an ABABABCABAB format. This is easy on the listener’s ear and allows the chorus to stay fresh in the mind at all times, creating a memorable refrain. The song lasts for 2:35 seconds but manages to fit 5 verses and choruses, as well as a solo. This keeps the listener’s attention. The contrasting rhythmic elements of the beat between the verse and the chorus give it a great dynamic. It’s constantly up and down, creating a wonderful tension throughout. Elvis’ melodic contour is of the same register throughout, in a pentatonic blues style, which adds more contrast and colour to the track. The lyrics invite listeners to dance and have a good time no matter how bad things get. For example, the fourth verse (Lieber/Stoller, 1956) says: The sad sack was a sittin’ on a block of stone, Way over in the corner weepin’ all alone, The warden said, hey, buddy, don’t you be no square, If you cant find a partner use a wooden chair. ’ These lyrics suggest that even if you’re all alone in a jail cell, you can always dance with the wooden chair you’re sitting on! It has been suggested that Jailhouse Rock has homosexual undertones. Lyrics say â€Å"You’re the cutest jailbird I ever did see† (Lieber/Stoller, 1956) and as Cracked points out, â€Å"Last time we checked, prison wasnt co-ed† (2011). But for me it’s just a clever way of getting people to dance-anything goes when the music rolls. In contrast, I’d like to talk about a song called Legalize It by Peter Tosh. Peter Tosh was the lead guitarist in Bob Marley’s Wailers before going solo and releasing this self-titled album in 1976 (Independent, 2013). The track is in a traditional reggae rhythm of 72bpm in a 4/4 time that allows for the offbeat to create the reggae feel. The Guitar chords are F#-E repeated on the offbeat locking with the drums to create a really tight groovy rhythm. The bass riff is bang on with the first two beats of the bar locking in with the bass drum which is also placed at the first two beats of the bar. This is a classic example of a rhythm section being totally locked in to again, create that rock steady/reggae rhythm. The track doesn’t have many dynamics apart from the introduction leading into the song. It is then broken up with drum fills and a couple of guitar licks around the chords. Unlike â€Å"Jailhouse Rock†, this track does not jump from verse to chorus at the same pace but does have a verse-chorus structure. Both the chorus and verse of Legalize It are based over the two chords mentioned above (F#-E), whereas Jailhouse Rock uses a separate chord structure for both its verse and chorus. Legalize It simply alternates between the verse and chorus lyrics creating a hypnotic feel or ‘stoned’ feel. This perfectly suits the lyrics, which are a clear message to the legalization of marijuana, and the freedom and spiritualization of the Rastafarian race. Pop Matters notes that â€Å"Tosh believed deeply in his cause; it was part of his spiritual life as a devotee to Rastafari and he fought for it. Tosh had run in’s with officials where he blew smoke in their faces. To him, marijuana was righteous and this record wasn’t some childish call to get high-it was a vital shout for religious freedom† (2011). Legalize It is a brilliant example of how music can be used to emphasize lyrics and vise-versa. Elvis made his name as a hip-shaking, gyrating, rebel rousing pop musician in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Peter Tosh was just as rebellious, albeit with a different message. Taken together, we have two very passionate vocalists with the power to send a message through music to the masses. Although the songs use different styles, they have a common ground and that is the message that comes with the music. The ability to deliver an inspiring message to the masses is a powerful gift used by monarchs, governments and songwriters to this day. One of the effects is that people will have lack of communication skills where when they always communicate through online medium, they will have no ability or lack of skills to speak face to face with others. They will also will hard to differentiate on how to talk or handle different level of person such as in formal or informal occasion. Communication skill is one of the interpersonal skills of a person and this is one of the most important skills that one’s should have. Next, the person who always depends on online medium of communication will have the problem of lack of confident level. This is because in online medium communication, the person will not need to meet the person to communicate but face to face communication will need the person to meet with others. When someone who has no experience in face to face dealing with others, they will have the problem with their confident level especially someone who has the nervous attack problem. Thus when they need to communicate face to face, usually the deal will hard to be accomplished. The other effect is the technological communication is it may affect the ability to express someone’s ideas clearly. When someone are constantly using short forms and slang while texting or in others online medium communication, it is hard to remember to use proper grammar when they need to write formal emails, letters or papers. Technology may harm the communication skills at work and in school since it may degrading the ability to speak publicly and in writing formally. Sometimes the person will not realize that they are using short forms in their formal works. Technology may also harm our ability to deal with conflict. This can be seen from a situation where we have a fight with our friend, we can just send them a text message or Facebook message to tell what is wrong rather than confront them face to face. Sometime, a personal issue will become a big issue when the problem is posted through the social account with the interventions of others. Many people in society are beginning to take it as an easy way out when it comes to conflict. Although modern technology brings a lot of pleasure in our life but it also may bring harm to us. Instead of having a pleasant conversation with our family, friends or significant others, we are busy to focus on our computer screens. This will not only harm the skills but also will create a distance with our family and friends. [ 500 words ] 4) In your life experience, what is the best advice you have ever received? Advice is given to remind someone what they should do or what they should not do in their life. Usually an advice was given by someone to the person that they care such as by parents to their child, by friend to another friend, and by a teacher to the students. People may receive the advice and translate it according to their understanding. It may be used as guidelines in someone’s life. The best advice that I ever receive is from my parent where they remind me to never give up in whatever I am doing. In my understanding, the advice may be used in many situations. The first situation is during my study, where until now I am still struggle to get the highest education that I am capable to achieve. Although I admit that there are hard times during my study especially in dividing time between work, family, and study but the advice given by my parent are inspiring me to do my best. When I feel stressed during my revision or when I need to faced timeline to send my assignment, the advice keep on playing in my mind to make sure that I will always success in what I am doing. Next, the advice of never give up is also inspiring me in my marriage life, where as a wife and mother who is working and in the same time studying, I feel the pressure but when remembering the advice, I feel strong. I manage to fulfill my responsibility towards my husband and children. I will never give up in fulfilling my responsibility towards my family. I keep reminding myself to stay strong so that I can take care of my family members wherever they need me. In working, as one of the subordinates there will be a lot of pressure given by the employers or high ranking officers. Advice given by my parent is the inspiration for me to be one of the courage and highly motivated staff. I keep on reminding myself not to give up when given many task and always stay calm in facing the situation. In my work, I have to deal with the public, from various levels of life, attitude and race. Thus I have to always give my best to help them although sometime I have been cursed by them but it is my responsibility to give the best service to the public. The advice of never give up given is suitable to use in every single inch of life. It can be regarded as inspiration for us to always do our best in whatever we are doing in life. Giving up is not a mean of facing any difficulties in life since if we give up before giving our best, we will never know what we actually can do, our ability to face any conflict of life. Once we manage to settle any conflict rose in our life, we will feel the satisfaction and we will feel stronger. [ 500 words ] 5) Tourism is becoming increasingly important as a source of revenue for many countries but its disadvantages should not be overlooked. What are some of the disadvantages of tourism? Tourism in a country happens when the outsiders or people who live in other countries come to visit our country. In tourism, the people who come will be call as a tourist and they will usually visit interesting places in a country either because of the custom of the place visited such as village, beauty of that place such as island around Malaysia, or maybe because they like the weather or activities at that place. Although tourism is one of the source of revenue to our economy but it also may bring some disadvantages to us. One of the disadvantages that can be identified is from the aspect of criminal, where there are many criminals happen with the entrance of the tourist. Some of the tourist will come using the social visit pass into the country to do crime such as black money, drug trafficking, prostitution and some others. Many cases reported that all the crime was done by the outsiders who came as a tourist in Malaysia and this will ruin our Malaysian. The other disadvantage is the attire of the tourist that comes to Malaysia. In their country they are free to wear anything that they are comfortable with but in Malaysia there are many attire that they are wearing is not suitable and it can be regarded as not respecting the local’s tradition and customs. Further, there are Malaysian who already influenced by those attires and they start to wear just like the tourist. In Malaysia, there is ethnic’s sensitivity to be respect by the tourist especially Muslims citizen’s sensitivity. Next, in respect of social life, the tourist that come are from different type of religion, for them it will be not an  offence to mix between genders but in Malaysia it is indecent to do it especially in public. In some cases, there are tourists that invite the beach boys to their chalet to accompany them. For the villagers nearby it is wrong and may ruin Malaysian. It is not right for the tourist to do such things in other’s country. Further, since many places have been upgraded to be tourism spot, ma ny things are changes, including prices of goods and services. The local traders are increasing their goods and services price since the place is now full with the tourist and it is the time for them to get more profit in their business. This has led to the local to also suffer the expensive price of goods and services. In addition, the local needs to compete with the tourist to get a place in the public transport and also if they are going to a vacation with their family. The tourist are everywhere and usually in getting a place in the local chalet or hotel in the tourism spot, the tourist will booked months before their vacation but the local will only booked their place in less than a month. The local needs to compete with the tourist although this is their own country.
